Canterbury Cathedral Lodge Wedding Photography

A bride waits at the entrance to a small church with her father.

Having Canterbury Cathedral (a World Heritage Site) as background to your wedding photos is quite the stunning option if you can get it, and that was what Debbie and Malcolm's wedding had by holding their reception at Canterbury Cathedral Lodge and their ceremony at St Mary’s Church in Nackington.  It was a great day, and here is what Debbie and Malcolm were kind enough to say about my efforts on the day:

"MBH Wedding Photography provided a professional service from start to finish.  The pre-event planning was thorough, and included a visit to the church as well as listening and noting exactly what we wanted.

On the day, Matthew the photographer was unobtrusive, and the coverage was comprehensive; resulting in some truly wonderful photos.  A lovely mix of natural and formal shots really captured the essence of the day - and it is not just us saying that, the guests and others that have seen the photos are equally complimentary.

Absolutely no hesitation in recommending."

Before having a look at a larger selection of photos from the day I just wanted to quickly talk about this specific photo from the day.

An elderly lady looks proud at seeing her son after he has got married.

This really is one of my favourite wedding photos I have taken, and in many ways it sums up my approach to photography. I used to find welcoming lines at weddings quite tedious affairs, but that was until I learnt to position myself behind the Bride & Groom and focus on the guests. Now, it is one of my favourite parts of the day because armed with my trusty 50mm lens I can capture a whole range of human emotion, from happiness, laughter, pride all the way through to envy!

The photo above was taken at Canterbury Cathedral Lodge, just a stones away from Canterbury Cathedral itself. I had positioned myself behind the groom with my camera set to f/2 to try and isolate the guests face in the frame. The lady above is the mother of the groom and I believe she is in hers 90's. The look on her face sums it all up, and shows the power of photography as it doesn't need any lengthy explanation along with it. So proud.

This photo was used recently at a documentary photography workshop and one of my fellow photographers commentated that he would put this in black & white. I have tried this, but something about the pink of her hat and her bright blue eyes make this work better in colour.

St Mary’s Church in Nackington

I have photographed many weddings over the years, and we are blessed in the UK to have so many Churches that are centuries old and exude a sense of history and charm. For what it lacked in size, St Mary’s Church made up for it with bags of character. There is a photo of Debbie and her Dad walking into the church, and it just seems to sum up small English church weddings which I just love!

Please enjoy the photos below from Debbie and Maslcolm’s special day.
